De Thomas, Amsterdam
A celebration in De Thomas by female voices of leaders and fighters. With Rosaliene Israël, Meral Polat, Marjolein Moorman, Julia-Beth Harris and the ABC Gospel Choir
“Not being able to tell your story is like a living death, and sometimes a literal one. Having a voice is essential. Human rights are about more, but this is the core of it, and so you can see the history of the lack of women's rights as a history of silence, and breaking that silence” – Rebecca Solnit
A program for International Women's Day with a swinging and inspiring evening where the voices of women take center stage. Voices that take the right, through speaking or remaining silent, to bring something into the world that we no longer want to ignore today. The evening revolves around preaching and speaking, a celebration to give the silence that has passed a visible place in our collective memory, to attempt to break the silence that is still ongoing and to leave the silence that is yet to come on our shoulders while singing. to stand.
Theater maker and singer Meral Polat takes you to another world with her poetic songs in Kurdish and Turkish. She sings movingly about the generational pain and limitation that women carry with them, and about the liberation thereof. As an alderman, Amsterdam councilor Marjolein Moorman fights for the soul of Amsterdam and for more equality of opportunity. Pastor-scriba Rosaliene Israël had to fight to be able to preach. She escaped the strict Reformed environment in which she grew up to become a pastor, woman or not. Julia-Beth Harris, born in Cape Town, bridges the gap between cultures with her poems.
We sing and swing with ABC Gospel Choir and let our voices be heard!
